Mormon church PR Department Playbook:

Since RMN took the mantle of the propheticus, there have been a lot of "revelations" popping up all over the place, and timing couldn't be more coincidental for many of them. Enter the church PR department...

PREP: With the resources and capabilities of the church, if you think it is not run like a business in every way, you are very mistaken. The PR department for the church is actually staffed with some very talented people. Like in every major corporation of the church's size, PR is a very important function because we all know that one major PR issue can have devastating impact if not handled properly. Think of Boeing and the 737 Max 800 issue and how that is a simple mechanical problem with such huge impact on life and money. If you think the church is not aggressively protecting its interests, you could not be more wrong.

The Church's PR department maintains something called a "RESPONSE-BOOK" (it's called many things in the industry) where they have prepared statements, language, and responses for a majority of different foreseeable issues. A missionary dies in the field, LDS leader accused of misconduct, Disaster and Relief, etc. These are often prepared and referenced when necessary. Common language can easily be seen across the responses.

The Church's PR department maintains something as well called a "STORY-BOOK" (again, called different things) where uplifting and faith promoting messages, go to be carefully formatted (yes, word-smithing is a real thing) and prepared for release when times are appropriate. These are stories designed to be correlated across the church and this is why you often hear the same language from multiple individuals when "news" happens.

In the STORY-BOOKS, they have ready-to-go stories to be released at a moments notice if necessary. For an organization as large and complicated as the church, to release a story from the church is a big deal, and it is very often strategically planned. Couple examples:

  1. Bad or negative news stories most often are released on a Friday afternoon when they are least likely to be noticed but are necessary to not appear non-transparent. The "News Cycle" is actually something that is calculable.
  2. Positive or encouraging news is most often released on a Monday to maximize it's exposure and effect. This is also particularly true for organizations releasing financials at the end of a quarter etc. (church doesnt have to worry about that).
  3. Positive and encouraging news is often used to offset perceived bad news is in the media, has a longer cycle than expected, or is particularly damaging.
  4. Many companies (churches too) have positive and sensational stories available to release on-demand, and if they are not time sensitive, they can be held for months or sometimes years. They eventually get released if there is no longer a strategic need, or the a news story runs it course.

In the church, they have begun working on a NUMBER of upcoming revelations to be used by the church's PR department to the greatest benefit possible. A transitioning mormon like me can definitely argue with you about the source of them, but you can be assured that more things are in the pipeline waiting for the right circumstances to be released.

Q: Does the release of the "Changes for Temple Marriage requirements as it pertains to civil unions" have anything to do with the bad press of late?

A: Absolutely. This is textbook use of a large PR machine to help control the message.

If you are interested in more upcoming PR/Revelation disclosures, Bill Reel has been extremely accurate in his predictions so far. It's almost like he has "inside knowledge". Wonder who that could be. (no really, I wonder who that could be :)

Cheers Mates
