New Strategy for Paying An Honest Tithing

I've been taking with my wife tonight about the law of tithing and my reluctance to give to an organization (LDS Church) that I now feel is corrupt in how it uses sacred tithing funds. She’s a TBM but is fine with my paying tithing through creative ways. I thought about charities. Suddenly, I remembered a particular charity I believe in and felt a burst of excitement at this inspiration.

Before I donated, I remembered that my employer recently started a program to match employees’ charitable contributions up to a certain dollar amount per year. I logged onto that system and made a donation with the money I’ve been keeping aside for tithing.

Never before have I been able to double my money to a charity — and my wife supports me giving to uplifting causes outside the LDS framework as tithing to the Lord. I can double my contributions and be square with the Lord. Each time I tithe, I get to choose where the donation will go to do the most good. This is very freeing, and I’m feeling pretty good about it.

For those of you who still consider tithing a commandment of God but have concerns about how the Church spends donations, what is your strategy for paying it?
