Yoga Journey
I'm male, 59 years old and about 30 pounds overweight. I'm also from the Midwest, single, and I have an 18 year old daughter who is a Freshman in college. She's not my biological daughter, but her biological father was never in the picture and I've been involved since she was an infant. She lives with her mother and we are on very good terms.My only experience with Yoga was about 15 years ago when I took a few free Bikram Yoga classes at the suggestion of a friend. I was, and still am, a complete beginner. I got through the classes Ok, but the classes were expensive, and after my free trial I decided not to enroll in any more classes. I remember meeting a woman in class who lived in my building, who had been practicing Bikram for some time, and I asked her what she thought of the class. She told me a story of a 60 year old woman she worked with who was in fantastic shape. So she asked this person what her secret was, and the woman told her about Bikram yoga. And then she found out the woman was actually 70.Flash forward to now, and I'm ready to give yoga a try again, although this time I'm going to start from home. My goals are to get myself into some sort of regular exercise routine, and hopefully become more flexible and increase my balance into my later years. I'd also like to reduce my stress. I'm not in search of a spiritual experience, but I am open to the possibility.Some of the stresses I feel now have to do with my relationship with my daughter's mother, the stress I feel in running my own business, and financial stress associated with paying for college tuition. My daughter's mother and I (I'll call her K) are not in a sexual relationship but neither of us are involved with anyone else. At this point it's more of an amicable divorce type of relationship, but there are times I feel taken advantage of, in that I feel like K has higher expectations of me than she should, given the status of our relationship.This time of year is the slowest time of year for my business, but of course this time of year is when I'm spending the most money because of the holidays, followed by year end taxes. I've been asked to contribute to college tuition even though K has enough money to pay for it all. Honestly, it's going to be a struggle for me because I don't make a lot of money. But at the same time I want to contribute because I want to have some skin in the game. And of course, I love my daughter and I don't want her to feel like a burden.I'm sure we all feel these same types of stresses in one variation or another, I just wanted to share mine.I did some research online and I came across Yoga for Complete Beginners from Yoga with Adriene. This is a 20 minute routine that I'm able to get through. I like Adriene's style, she doesn't take herself too seriously, and she's encouraging without any of the condescension that sometimes accompanies these things. She's genuine and I like that.At this point I've done this video 7 times although not in a row. I have to say, I felt "something" after every workout. It's kind of hard to articulate, but I felt a physical sense of accomplishment and I felt like I was more aware of my body for some time after I was done. I could see where I might have woken up parts of my body that were hibernating. I also felt a little soreness especially in my shoulder, but it felt muscular and that went away.I'm encouraged, and i'm going to try to be aware of any changes, be it body or mind, and write them down.
